Pilonidal sinus first manifests itself with the formation of sinus mouths opening out of the skin in the coccyx (sacrococcygeal region). There are usually hairs that penetrate under the skin from these sinus openings.
It is thought that pilonidal sinus disease is caused by small particles such as hair and thrush accumulated in the coccyx and passing into the subcutaneous tissue with the friction movement.
Hair reaching the subcutaneous tissue causes abscess development with the entry of bacteria. Then, over time, the disease spreads by opening new tunnels in the skin. Although it is more common in young adults (15-35), it can be seen at all ages.
Its incidence in men is much higher than in women (3-4 times). For this reason, this disease is generally known as a young adult male disease.
The amount of hair on the back, waist and coccyx and their shedding is high, the coccyx is narrow and deep, the skin in the area is thin, having a hard hair structure, not paying enough attention to the hygiene of the area, frequent sweating, working in jobs that require constant sitting and obesity. Conditions such as these are risk factors for pilonidal sinus.
Its treatment is surgery. Various methods such as microsinusectomy, phenol application, laser, primary excision, karydakis repair, limberg flap, rotational flaps are used among the surgical options.
