Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery

Obesity and Metabolic Surgery

Bariatric surgery is the general name given to various obesity surgery operations that help in weight loss. As for "Metabolic Surgery", digestive system surgeries performed to treat Type 2 diabetes (Tip2DM) and obesity together are called Metabolic Surgery. It generally covers some surgeries performed for the treatment of obesity and more recently derived surgeries.

In this context, many diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndromes, sleep apnea, and various musculoskeletal disorders may accompany the condition. Apart from these, the decrease in the individual's competence, social exclusion and self-esteem problems also negatively affect the quality of life.

Although the ideal approach is to first solve the problem of obesity by applying diet, exercise and life changes in a disciplined manner before it reaches the level of morbid obesity, the probability of losing and maintaining weight with diet alone has been determined as 3%, even in young adults with BMI>35. There is more difficulty in maintaining this condition than in losing weight. In this case, bariatric surgical interventions have become more popular. Currently, the only procedures that provide acceptable permanent weight loss are surgical operations.

Long-term studies confirm that bariatric operations cause long-term weight loss, changes in the metabolic consequences of morbid obesity, and a significant reduction in overall mortality from diabetes, cardiovascular complications, and cancer.

Which patient groups does Obesity and Metabolic surgery cover?

It is calculated as BMI (body mass index)=Weight/HEIGHT2:

•       If our patients with BMI = 35kg/m2 have a comorbid disease; They can also have these surgeries.
•       Patients in whom all non-surgical methods fail
•       Patients with obesity cases that are not due to endocrine cause
•       Obesity diagnosed errors for more than 5 years
•       Patients with a high acceptable risk/benefit ratio of the operation
•       Patients without substance addiction, including smoking
•       Psychologically stable patients
•       Patients with a realistic view of lifestyle changes
